Imposter Syndrome in Vet Med: “What If I’m Not Good Enough”

Published on February 1, 2026 at 2:12 AM

If you’ve ever thought, “Everyone else seems to know what they’re doing except me,” welcome — you’re not alone. Imposter syndrome is incredibly common in vet tech school and early in practice.

You’re learning a massive amount of information, hands-on skills, medical terminology, and decision-making all at once. Feeling unsure doesn’t mean you don’t belong — it means you’re still learning. Confidence in this field comes from repetition, experience, and time, not from magically knowing everything right away.

The techs you look up to? They had shaky hands placing their first catheter too. They double-checked their math. They asked “maybe silly” questions. The difference is they kept going.

Not knowing yet is not the same as not being capable.
