One of the biggest worries pet owners have is, “But what happens while they’re asleep?” Totally fair question. The good news is your pet isn’t just “asleep and left alone” — they’re being closely watched the entire time. During anesthesia, a veterinary technician’s job is to focus on your pet from start to finish. Think of us as their personal safety monitor while they’re under.
Here’s what we’re keeping a close eye on:
Heart Rate & Heart Rhythm
We monitor how fast the heart is beating and make sure it’s beating in a normal rhythm. Anesthesia can affect the cardiovascular system, so we watch for any changes and respond right away if something needs adjusting.
Breathing
We track how fast your pet is breathing and how well they’re moving air in and out. Because they’re intubated (a tube helps them breathe safely), we can also monitor the oxygen and anesthetic gases they’re receiving.
Blood Pressure
This is a big one. Blood pressure tells us how well blood is circulating to important organs like the brain and kidneys. If it drops or rises too much, we can adjust fluids or anesthesia levels to bring it back where it should be.
Body Temperature
Pets under anesthesia can’t regulate their body temperature well, and they tend to get cold. We use warming devices and keep checking their temperature to keep them comfortable and help with recovery.
Oxygen Levels
We monitor how much oxygen is in the blood to make sure your pet’s body is getting what it needs while they’re asleep.
Depth of Anesthesia
We’re constantly assessing whether your pet is at the right level of anesthesia — not too light and not deeper than necessary. We look at reflexes, jaw tone, eye position, and vital signs to guide us.
All of this monitoring happens continuously — not just once in a while. Your pet has a trained professional whose main job during the procedure is to watch these numbers, notice small changes, and act quickly if needed.
So while your pet is asleep, there’s a whole lot of careful attention happening behind the scenes to keep them safe, stable, and supported every step of the way.
