What Your Vet Tech Is Actually Doing During Surgery

Have you ever wondered what actually happens behind the scenes after you drop your pet off? I promise — nothing scary!

After we go over fasting history and the rest of the intake questions with you, we bring your furry friend into our treatment area for a quick exam. For procedures like neuters, we also double-check that everything is where it should be before surgery day officially begins.

As veterinary technicians, we’re with your pet the whole time — from drop-off to pick-up. If you choose pre-surgical bloodwork, we’re the ones who collect the sample and run those tests. We give the sedation injections that help your pet relax, place IV catheters so we have safe vein access, and intubate them so they can receive anesthesia properly.

We also prepare your pet for surgery by shaving and cleaning the surgical area, and we closely monitor their heart rate, breathing, blood pressure, and other vitals the entire time they’re under anesthesia to keep them safe and stable.

If your pet is in for a dental procedure, we take all the dental X-rays and perform the scaling and polishing to get those teeth nice and clean.

In short — your pet is never alone, and there’s a whole team working carefully behind the scenes to keep them comfortable and safe every step of the way.
